Yesterday was a sad day for everyone who stands for freedom and development.
The European People’s Party (EPP) wants to pay tribute to Margaret Thatcher. Our President, Wilfried Martens, made the following statement about the late prime minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher:
“It is with great sadness that I learned about the passing of my long-time friend, Baroness Margaret Thatcher. We both became the prime ministers of our countries in 1979 and we worked closely as colleagues in the European Council.
Although we had very different visions for the future of Europe, we developed a close personal relationship and shared many special moments. For example, when the British ferry ‘Herald of Free Enterprise’ sank off the coast of Zeebrugge on 6 March 1987, both Thatcher and I visited together the victims and shared the pain of our two nations. In 1990, just a few days prior to her resignation, I was sitting by her side at a dinner in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, discussing her political frustrations. She will always be remembered by her strength, courage and decisiveness.”
As a personal a tribute I have attached a video of one of her great speeches in the Parliament: “Margaret Thatcher on Socialism“
